John (Jack) Paine of Victoria, BC, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 30th, 2021, at Amica on the Gorge in Victoria, BC.
Jack was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on May 20th, 1936, to Charles and Barbara Paine. Jack was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Paine, who passed on May 27th, 2015. Jack and Margaret met and fell in love in Burnaby in March 1958 and were married on October 4th of the same year. Jack and Margaret raised their three children in Coquitlam, BC, then moved to Calgary, Alberta for several years before retiring to Galiano in 1992. Jack enjoyed his time in Calgary and made fast friends. He grew to love Southern Alberta, it’s Rocky Mountains and the Western culture of Calgary, but eventually, his lifelong passion for the west coast and the ocean drew Jack and Margaret to Galiano.
Jack was an infectious personality and always found ways to be involved with people. He put others ahead of himself and was energetic and positive. Even in his later days, he was a role model for many. After a 35-year business career, Jack became even busier with activities including bridge, fishing (even chartering), golfing, reading, and of course, volunteering. Jack was a core volunteer with the Lions Club of Galiano for over 20 years, and the Galiano Golf Club. He was also a lifelong soccer fan and loved both the Whitecaps and Manchester United (in fun contrast to Margaret’s beloved Liverpool SC). In his early years, he was the President of the Blue Mountain Soccer Club in Coquitlam and later, was a Power Squadron Instructor on Galiano.
Jack is survived by his children; Laurie Bullis of Prince George, Tracey (Nick) Szirth of Qualicum, and Ian (Lori) Paine of Edmonton; his sister Marion Jardine of Langley and brother Mike of Nakusp ; seven grandchildren: Dale, Kellie, Paige, Nicole, Jack, Alec and Kerran; and three great-grandchildren: Lilly, Ayda, and Dax.
The family is ever grateful for the wonderful care and support provided by the team at Amica on the Gorge.
A picnic celebration in honour of Jack is planned for family at Surrey Bend Park, on Saturday, August 28th (Covid-19 permitting) from 11am to 4pm. A celebration on Galiano Island will be planned for the Spring of 2022. Memorial donations to the BC Cancer Foundation and the Galiano Lions Society are appreciated.
