Alan Joseph Pettigrew passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at Rest Haven Lodge in Sidney, BC. Alan was born December 19, 1918 in Matane, Quebec on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River. He was predeceased in 2000 by his loving wife Jeannette Emily Pettigrew and in 1983 by his daughter-in-law Marta Escutin Pettigrew. Alan will be deeply missed by his children, Denis (Vicki), Paulette (Shel), Suzanne, David and Marc (Pam). He leaves eight grandchildren, Lesley, Stephanie (Mike), Catherine, Sara, Aaron (Skylar) Danielle, Bobby (Kim) and Brie (Jamie) and seven great-grandchildren, Sam, Serafina, Harlow, Wyatt, Ryerson, Ashtyn and Max who were all special to him.
Alan was stationed at Pat Bay during WW2 and fell in love with Deep Cove where he returned with his young family in 1947. Jean and Alan raised their five children on Madrona Drive where they embraced the joys of living in a small community. Alan was an avid boater and fisherman, he was crazy about hockey and would toast his Montreal Canadians while watching HNIC. He walked every day and always encouraged his family to stay physically fit. A really good day for Alan was when he spotted a great log floating in the bay that he could salvage for firewood. He was generous and kind. Alan made time for everyone, had a great sense of humour and loved life to the fullest. We will forever cherish the countless memories of summer barbeques, camping, water skiing, beach combing, family travel and that early morning nudge "let's go fishing".
The family would like to thank the staff of The Peninsula at Norgarden, Central Care Home and Resthaven Lodge for their excellent care in recent years.
Alan's wishes were to have a private family gathering at a later date. Donations in Alan's memory may be made to Saanich Marine Rescue Society or a charity of your choice.
