Joy grew up in High River and Calgary before she and her husband, Herman, retired out to Victoria, an area she loved greatly. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her husband of 72 years, Herman Westland; her son Jeff Westland and wife Phyllis; her daughters Janis Tickles and husband Dean; Allison Fyles and husband Glenn; her grandchildren Riley Tickles; Victoria Schneider and husband Ian; Brianna Westland; and Nick Fyles; and great-grand children Cove and Jettson Schneider.
Joy was a dedicated mother and was passionately involved in her children’s lives, volunteering in their schools, being a Girl Guide leader, playing games, teaching crafts, and supporting them in whatever hobbies or activities they wanted to do. Once they retired, she and Herman became actively involved in leadership in the Saanich Newcomers Club, planning local activities, tours, and later cruises and trips. Joy loved traveling in her later years and had fond memories of the many wonderful places they visited.
Joy had a talent for working with her hands. Her creativity was displayed in the sweaters she knitted, rugs she crocheted the beautiful, embroidered pictures that hung on her walls, and the hand tooled cards she created for Christmas and other occasions.
She was a person who genuinely loved people and had a true gift of hospitality. Whether they were friends, relatives, or occasionally strangers her children brought home, they were always welcome in her house. She loved to entertain, and you could always expect coffee, tea, and cookies ready when you visited her home. She never met a stranger and welcomed all with an open heart. She will be fondly remembered by all who crossed her path.
