Joyce I. Caldwell

September 25, 1922October 9, 2020

With profound sorrow, the family announce Joyce’s peaceful passing Friday, Oct 9/20.

She is survived by her loving husband of 70 yrs Frank, daughter Trish, son Gerry (Donna), grandchildren Robert, Linda (Luke), great grandchildren Mercedes, Jaydin, Isabel, pre-deceased by her Mother Julia and Father Algie.

Joyce, born in Minnedosa MB, moved with her family as a young girl to Wpg where she started dance school. The arts, dance, music, cinema, costume, Broadway, and all its glitter quickly became her passion. She worked at Eaton’s, tap danced around Wpg, and entertained base troops in MB and SK during WWII, before marrying Frank whom she met in grade 9.

Married life began in Saskatoon where she taught dance, kept the neighborhood kids in check and made life fun. A master Tap Dancer, her talent beamed from within while performing in her “Chicago” taps. The Caldwell’s headed west to Victoria in 1966. She belonged to St. John’s Anglican Church for 50+ years. Cherished friendships and memories were nurtured that lasted her lifetime, and live on.

Joyce was a loving, sincere, gracious Daughter, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Friend. She enjoyed music, hosting dinner parties, animals, gardening, art, style, sewing and much more, was a trailblazer ahead of her time, and exuded a sweet, kind, generous and adventurous heart.

Deepest gratitude to her caregivers (Carol and Team, Oak Bay Lodge, Summit and Tyler) for your companionship and comfort through her long journey, and to our family of dear friends – it takes a village!

Godspeed our Angel, may your brave and beautiful soul fly HIGH; your loving spirit lives on in our hearts forever.

On Thursday, Oct 22, 2020 her family will privately lay Joyce to rest. A future celebration TBA by invite only observing COVID-19 protocols.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.

I have so many fond memories of my Auntie Joyce over the years that I will always hold dear to my heart. I loved her signature "chuckle" and her ability to always laugh so easily and whole heartedly. So many fun times going over to the house on Belmont throughout my childhood and then again in later years. Auntie Joyce always had so many projects on the go!!! I admired her sense of fashion and attention to detail, everything always matching even in her most senior years. I was glad to have shared many "Macaroni and cheese" lunches at Red Robins. You will be sadly missed. You were an incredibly courageous lady and loved by many. God bless her family at this time of grief.

Auntie Joyce,
I remember the time you came from Saskatoon one summer and you taught Di and I a few tap dance steps. Trish, Di and I lined up and did the steps together. I smile when I think of this moment in time, it seems like only yesterday.
I remember your beloved dog Tammy, and your incredible sense of fashion.
Thank you for being a part of my life, Auntie Joyce.
I wish you peace 💐

Over 30 years ago my husband Phil and I were on our holidays travelling the island. Frank & Joyce extended their hospitality to us and we stayed at their beautiful home in Victoria.

I remember Joyce as being a most gracious and kind person.

Our heart goes out to Frank, Trish and the family.

With heartfelt sympathy,

I am in complete awe of your strong spirit, your courage, your bravery for the long battle you endured. As you faced one hurdle after another, you kept going & forged ahead, every single day, with never a complaint! You are my hero!
My heart is crushed, yet I am so deeply grateful I had you to share all these years with. You are the best of the best Mom, and will always be with me, always.
I find deep comfort knowing you are at peace, and tap dancing your way around heaven while being with your loved ones again.
Rest in Power & Peace my beautiful sweet Mother.
Forever, Your Loving Daughter, Trish xo
