Katalin Laszlo was a survivor. Born two months premature in the middle of winter in a small town in Hungary she was not expected to live. Her strong will and gentle yet stubborn soul kept her with us for 86 years, through which she survived the second world war, a revolution, escape to the West, and building a new life in Canada. When her and her closest friend docked at Pier 21 in Halifax, after refugee camps in Austria and transport across the stormy Atlantic via Italy, they were asked where in Canada they would like to settle. The response was, we’ve come this far, we might as well go as far as we can and thus began the final leg of their journey to Victoria, B.C. This spirit of adventure served her well, but she was at heart a kind, gentle and beautiful soul who longed for a peaceful life. She was a devoted mother, making countless sacrifices for her family, and always giving selflessly and with love. Although she did not have much herself, she always had spare change or a chocolate bar to give to anyone in need, or a baby blanket to crochet for a young mother she just met. She loved gardening, sketching, crocheting and, above all, she loved being a mother.
Left to mourn are her daughter Krisztina (son in law David Brock), son Steve, her closest friend of 65 years, Katalin Horvath, god-daughter Lillian Horvath, and the Horvath family (Susan, John, Kyle, and Kristine), brother Peter and countless others whose life she passed through.
A small private ceremony will be held for family. In memory, please make donations to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia.
