On August 25, 2015, Larry James Frederick Friedlander died suddenly at 47 years young in Victoria, BC. Larry’s family and friends were robbed of their superhero, Mr. Tally-Ho, a man with a heart of gold — a man who would do anything for anyone, who approached life with playfulness, and who’s endless stories and teasing always resulted in laughter.
As a clearly smitten husband and best friend to Donna Friedlander (nee Stenton) for 23 years, Larry created a marriage full of undying love, fun and romance. Larry was a great date! He also knew the exact balance of shoes and cheesecake required to offset his need for speed, motorized toys, knives, and ball caps! As a devoted dad, Larry taught his most precious daughters Brianna (age 14) and Kennadie (age 10) how to be confident, capable “country” girls who have their daddy's kindness and a zest for anything fun! Larry showed his girls how much he loved them each and every day, and has left them with a clear picture of what it looks like to have a strong, supportive family.
Larry was predeceased by his father, Jim, and leaves behind his loving mother, Patricia, and his beloved sister Lenora (Mark Lindsay) and her daughter Charla Nichol. Larry’s family loved him unconditionally, and even though his constant teasing and mischievousness could be exasperating, he could always be counted on and never let them down.
Larry leaves his much-loved extended family, father-in-law, Don Stenton (Erica Dhillon); mother-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Barron (predeceased by Frank); and sisters-in-law, Kathie Stenton (John Fuller) and Janet Stenton who knew from the moment they met Larry that he was the right “hunk-a-rama” for Donna. The family is devastated that Larry’s life-long contract with Donna has expired before its due date.
Larry is known to many in Victoria after spending almost 35 years with Tally-Ho Carriage Tours, working up from pooper-scooper to owner. Larry’s wisdom, wit and “special English” ensured that the staff (and horses) got through each day with a smile on their faces. He has left a legacy that will long be remembered.
Larry’s early departure was not deserved, but those who are left behind are comforted knowing that he lived his life to the fullest and wouldn’t have changed a thing — a mantra for life that we’ll do our best to follow! All whom loved Larry will never forget his wit, charm, authenticity, stories and undying love and caring for them.
A casual celebration of Larry’s life will be held on September 18, 2015, from 1:00 to 4:00 at the Mary Winspear Centre (2243 Beacon Ave W, Sidney, BC). The family wishes to thank everyone for their tremendous support and hopes you will join them to tell funny stories and remember the man who always made us smile.
