Born in Toronto Ontario on December 8th 1934 to Stephen and Anne Mayer, Madelaine grew up in Toronto and was an avid swimmer, diver and badminton player. At 18 she joined the Air Force and while stationed in North Bay she met her future husband Kerry and soon after on July 24, 1954, they were married in Toronto. While in North Bay, two daughters, Peg and Wendy were born. On a deployment to 4 wing Germany a son, Derek was born. At the end of that deployment the family transferred to CFB Edmonton (Namao) where Madelaine began her 20-year career with Canada Post. Upon Kerry’s retirement from the Air Force in 1971 the family then moved to Kerry’s hometown of Victoria B.C. She had a short career with Charts Canada before continuing her post office career. Kerry and Madelaine purchased and eventually rebuilt a cottage at Shawnigan Lake where many enjoyable summer weekends were spent with family and friends. Upon retirement Kerry and Madelaine became active travelers and cruisers.
Madelaine was also a 25 + year volunteer for Hospice and for many years annually volunteered at the Information Booth of the Tournament of Hope in support of the Dunahee family for which she was presented with a framed Certificate of Appreciation. In later years when their travels decreased, they acquired a property at Otter Point B.C. for enjoyable getaways. Madelaine was a woman of strong opinions, fiercely independent, extremely generous and set an excellent example for her children and grandchildren. The last 3years of Madelaine’s life was under the excellent care of the staff at Beckley Farm Lodge. The family warmly thanks the staff for the care Madelaine received. A Celebration of Life to be announced at a later date.
