Predeceased by her sisters Emily Bucklee and Mary MacArthur, and by her husband Joe in 1996 after 54 years of marriage. Survived by her children Helen Burton-McCarthy, Joe (Judy), Evan (Beverley) and Patrick (Angelika). Also grandchildren Christopher, Angela (Frank), Jennifer (Glen), Nancy (Stephen), Lindsay (Devon), Glen, Kara (Rob), Sandra (Andrew) and Matthew. And 12 great-grandchildren, in Ottawa and Calgary and on Vancouver Island. Margaret was born in Cassidy, British Columbia in 1917 where her father was a coalminer and the family operated a small farm. She attended the Victoria Normal School (Teachers' College), graduating in 1935. She taught for several years in South Wellington and North Oyster (near Ladysmith) and married in 1942. Margaret and Joe started their family in 1945 with the birth of Helen. From Ladysmith the family moved first to Burnaby and later to Ottawa for 18 years. Upon Joe's retirement from the Canadian Labour Congress in 1978, Margaret and Joe returned to BC and a new home in Victoria where they enjoyed a well-earned retirement. Margaret, known as "Queen of the Hill" for her daily walks up Mount Douglas, did so one last time on her 96th birthday; she ascribed her fitness to having never learned to drive a car. Margaret ended her days at Sidney All Care Seniors Residence. Thanks to the staff at Berwick House, where Margaret lived for several years, and to the staff of Sidney All Care who made her last two years both comfortable and interesting. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on April 27, 2019 at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Dr, Victoria, BC, V8Y 1B4.
