Mary ("Nanny Bainbridge") was born in Edinburgh Scotland on November 20, 1922. She met her husband Al ("Papa") during the war. They were married in Edinburgh on April 3, 1943 and settled in Victoria in 1945.
Mary worked at Eatons for many years until she retired when the grandchildren started coming along. She loved looking after babies and always told her stories about babysitting as a girl in Scotland. She loved to make her grandchildren and great-grandchildren laugh by making monkey faces.
Mary loved camping, boating and fishing. Mary and Al spent their early years at Mill Bay Marina. They then moved on to Cowichan Lake where they made many new friends and great memories. Mary loved to stay at the trailer at Cowichan Lake up until her early 80's. She loved to sell hotdogs for kid's day, and stopping for ice cream on the way home from the lake.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Al ("Papa") in October 1999, and her sister Pearl and brother John both in 2010.
Mary was fiercely independent and lived in her own home until she was 89, even mowing the grass and tending to her fish pond until she was into her mid-80's. Mary was famous for her rhubarb pie, and for her love of music. In February 2012 she moved to the Priory due to health concerns. We can't say enough about the care she got there.
Mary lived a long, full life and leaves behind her children Doug, Pat and Dianne, her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family. Mary did not wish to have a formal service, and therefore a private, immediate family gathering will be held to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
