With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of our beloved Mavis—devoted Mum to Jedda, Jindalee (Dan), Lincoln (Rita), and Joalah (Matt); and cherished Granny to Kaija, Georgia, Mexx, Owen, Griffin, and Kiki.
Mavis’s remarkable journey began on a sheep farm in the Australian outback, where she learned early on that life was richer with animals, hard work, and a good sense of humour. Leaving home at a young age to explore Europe, she carried with her an adventurous spirit, a practical mind, and likely a jar of Vegemite. It was in London that she met her soulmate, Rodney John, and together they eventually settled in Winnipeg - though “settled” might be too tame a word for a household brimming with children, friends, animals, laughter, and the occasional dose of chaos. Mavis wouldn’t have had it any other way.
She built a fulfilling career with Age and Opportunity, where she wore many hats: coordinator, therapist, peacekeeper, event planner, and unofficial counsellor—all rolled into one. Her colleagues often said the organization was never the same after she retired, and they meant it. She was the heart and soul of her team.
In retirement, Mavis and Rod moved to Victoria, B.C., to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Yet every summer, they made their way back to their beloved cottage in Sioux Narrows, where Mavis shared her passion for family, nature, long walks, loon calls, hummingbirds, and her garden.
An avid reader, Mavis was rarely without a book in hand and had many more stacked on her bedside table. She passed her love of reading along to her children and grandchildren, creating a legacy of stories and imagination.
Mavis gave far more to life and those around her than she ever took. She will be remembered not only for her kindness, generosity, patience, and warmth but also for her wonderful sense of humour. Her sparkling blue eyes, joyful laugh, and uncanny ability to find the silver lining will be deeply missed. She taught us to laugh often and love deeply - lessons we will carry with us always.
Mum, we find comfort in knowing you are now reunited with Dad. What a beautiful homecoming that must have been for you both.
You will be dearly missed, Mum, and forever remembered - with love, laughter, and endless gratitude.
