Mike will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Myrna, his daughter Terry (Earl Sandwith), son David (Carol Unfreed) and grandson Michael Sandwith (Kaitlin). Mike also leaves behind his cousin Marie Stodel (Vic) and brother-in-law Ray Vater (Barb). Mike was predeceased by his parents Jack and Agnes.
Mike emigrated from Coventry, England to Victoria, BC with his parents in 1947. At this time he was already an accomplished drummer having played with big bands from age 15. This love of music, especially jazz, would continue throughout Mike’s life and he continued playing until retirement.
Mike met the lovely Myrna Vater on a blind date and they were married October 1, 1953. Mike’s career began with the BC Government Purchasing Commission. From 1963 to 1967 the family lived in Prince Rupert where he was promoted to Sales Tax Inspector, overseeing the territory between Rupert and Burns Lake. Here he and Myrna began boating, joined Prince Rupert Yacht Club and met many lifelong friends. The summers were spent camping at Rathtrevor Beach.
Mike and Myrna became members of Capital City Yacht Club in 1974 and enjoyed 37 years of adventures throughout the Pacific Northwest on “Ungaua II” with family and many friends. Mike held the position of Commodore at CCYC in 1988.
Over the years Mike and Myrna’s travels took them to the Cook Islands, Raratonga, Tahiti, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Guatamala, British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Arizona and Mexico. Most recently, many winters were spent with family and friends in Rincon de Guayabitos, Mexico.
Mike has enjoyed a long retirement and has not missed a thing. He also enjoyed bridge, football and a good glass of red wine. We shall miss his wit and opinions!
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018 2:30 – 4:30 pm at Capital City Yacht Club, 10630 Blue Heron Road, Sidney, BC. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please donate to a charity of your choice in Mike’s honour.
