Michael Burke Walbank was born on 14 April 1933 in Bristol, England and emigrated to Victoria, British Columbia as a young man. He spent most of his professional life at the University of Calgary or in Greece. On retirement he returned to his home in Victoria where he spent 20 happy years before his sudden death on 25 May 2018. He is survived by his wife, Mary. He requested that there should be no funeral or religious service.
