Monica Mary nee (Smith) Chapman

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Monica (Monie), a loving, selfless, and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother (Nana), and friend to many. Monica was predeceased by her sister Barbara Smith and her grandson Kyle Chapman. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years, Frederick (Fred) Chapman, daughter Susan Saksun, son Steve Chapman (Kim), grandchildren Claire Saksun and Jay Chapman, and cousin Joan Fisher and family. Born, raised and married in Maidstone, Kent, England, Monica and Fred moved to Canada with two young children, living in St. John, Quebec City, and Prince George, before retiring to Victoria in 1983. Well known for her cheery sense of humour, Monica brightened the day of everyone that met her. Thinking back on her life, we remember a tireless volunteer with various organizations, including the Community Arts Councils of Prince George and Victoria, where no job was too small. She had many memorable performances with the Prince George Theatre Workshop, including roles as the mother in 'Barefoot In The Park', and Miss Prism in 'The Importance of being Ernest'. A hostess and chef extraordinaire, Monica delighted in giving gourmet lunch and dinner parties, where a dreamy chocolate concoction was usually offered. Although she didn't consider herself creative, Monica designed and created numerous glorious wedding cakes and knitted gifts for family and friends, and was still making her own Christmas cards and creating delightful poems at the age of 91.

A special thank you to Dr. Anoma Perera, for her care over the years, to Dr. Lauren Dewart for her outstanding thoughtfulness and dedication throughout Monica's difficult time with Congestive Heart Failure, and to the Community Nurses who cared for her and brightened her day. Thank you to the Palliative Home Team for making her comfortable in her final days; and a warm thank you to Natasha and staff at the First Memorial Funeral Home for the care and attention given to Monica and the family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
