Muriel Emily Young (nee Cullen) was born May 18, 1927, in Dublin, Ireland, and died on January 26, 2023, in Victoria, BC. She emigrated to Canada in 1954 to marry Lionel Duley Young spending her first decade here in Newfoundland. She spent much of her life in Saskatchewan, and finally enjoyed a long healthy retirement in BC. She made lifelong friends wherever she lived. She is predeceased by her sisters Audrey and Sylvia and brother Albert; her husband of 50 years Lionel Duley; and less than a month ago, her beloved first son Mark Burchell Young. She is survived by her son Lionel Trevor; daughters Gillian Susan (Michael Lee) and Jennifer Ann; grandchildren Emma and Eric Lee; and daughter-in-law Kathy Young (nee Albert). She was immensely proud of her family and counted our success as her greatest accomplishment.
Muriel took great joy in life and love and laughter. She was a voracious reader and was rarely stumped by a crossword clue. She loved scrabble, bridge, classical music and Saturday Afternoon at the Opera. She was an adventurous cook and accomplished baker and loved a good glass of wine with dinner and a sweet treat to finish things off. She loved to socialize and was very inclusive, welcoming everybody into her home. She was kind, patient and compassionate, and friends considered her the mother they never had. She loved to chat with strangers, especially if they had a dog, a young child, or any connection to Ireland or Newfoundland. She enjoyed a brisk stroll until near the end and quietly took pride in her self-sufficiency and resilience.
She lived a full life, contributed to the success of everyone in her family, and was surrounded with love and extraordinarily good health until the very end. She passed peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital where she received exemplary and compassionate care.
There will be a service to honour Muriel at St. Andrew Anglican Church, 9691 Fourth Street, Sidney, BC on Wednesday, February 1 at 11 am.
