October 29, 1934 – September 1, 2025 (90 years old)
It is with profound sadness and deep love that we share the passing of our beloved father, Norman McEvoy.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Norm’s life was shaped by resilience, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to others. At just 21, he journeyed alone to Canada in search of opportunity with the Canadian Bank of Commerce (now CIBC), bringing with him a tuxedo gifted by his father and a heart full of hope. That spirit of courage and optimism never left him. He built a distinguished 42-year career with CIBC, serving in 17 branches across BC and the Yukon, and earning accolades including the prestigious Chairman’s Award. He retired in 1998, proud of a career marked by integrity, leadership, and service.
Norm was a devoted husband to Peg, his soulmate of 66 years, and a proud father to Tracy (Lance Johnson) and Diane (Michael Ball). He adored Amelia and Alexander, his grandchildren. Family was his everything. He was our mentor, our cheering squad, our everything. He gave the best hugs and loved his wife, daughters, and grandchildren more than words can express. Among his proudest family moments were his marriage and raising two wonderful daughters.
He was always present—whether judging swim meets, emceeing music festivals, or simply showing up with quiet strength and encouragement. A class act in every sense, Norm lived a life of service and integrity. His volunteer work spanned the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Shriners (where he was known as “Danny Boy” the clown), CNIB, Camosun Foundation and more. He was instrumental in developing seniors’ residences in Cranbrook and Revelstoke.
Norm’s contributions to Freemasonry were extraordinary. Initiated in Belfast Lodge #257 in 1956, he went on to serve in numerous leadership roles across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. He was Worshipful Master of Victoria Columbia Lodge #1, Grand First Principal of the Royal Arch Masons of BC & Yukon (2012) and held honorary memberships in lodges across North America. He founded The Educator, a globally shared resource for Masonic education, and was instrumental in creating mentorship and diploma programs through the Ashlar College of Freemasonry, where he was honored as Director Emeritus. Sharing Masonic education was one of his greatest joys.
He was also the proud author of Journey to the Spirit, a work he shared worldwide and held close to his heart. A man of music, laughter, and wisdom, Norm sang with the Greater Victoria Police Chorus for many years, and his rich bass voice brought joy to many—especially when singing Irish ballads like “Danny Boy.”
Norm believed in hard work, creating options, and never looking back with regret. He often reminded us that we were fortunate, not lucky—a reflection of his deep gratitude and thoughtful perspective on life.
We were truly blessed to have him as our Dad. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave so freely.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Vancouver in the spring of 2026.
In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC or Broadmead Care Centre in Victoria, BC—two organizations that supported Norm and our family with compassion and care. We would like to extend a special thank you to the care and activities teams at Veteran’s Memorial Lodge who treated Dad as a person and encouraged him to live as fully as possible during his time there.
God Bless, Dad. We love you.
