Petronella Marcus

Petronella (Nel) Marcus, 90, passed away on June 18, 2025. Nel was born on May 11, 1935 in the coastal fishing village of Scheveningen, The Netherlands, as the second of three children. She moved to Canada in 1958 on the emigrant ship Groote Beer, and eventually settled on Vancouver Island where she raised her family.

Nel dedicated her life to creating a warm and nurturing home with her second husband, Norman in Metchosin. Nel's artistic talents blossomed and flourished throughout her life during her later years.

Nel’s vibrant acrylic and watercolour paintings graces her families’ homes in Victoria. She had soon discovered the technique of mixing collage and acrylic, and her friends and family members admired her artwork discovered through visits wherever she lived.

Beyond her artistic achievements, Nel was a loving mother to her daughter Jacoba (spouse Ron), son Rene (spouse Gillian) and four grandchildren – Brandan, Benjamin, Aidan and Axl. She found joy in visiting beaches, holidays with her sister Coby, visiting friends, garden walks, and tending gardens when the opportunity came.

Nel is survived by her children, four grandchildren, and her sister. She is resting peacefully at the Garden of Memories located at First Memorial Funeral Home (4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, British Columbia).
