She will be deeply missed by her sister Donna (Gordon Whyte), her children, Cherith Marlowe, Debbie (Doug Milne), Brent, sisters in law Cathy Cooper, Dorothy Cooper, brother in law John Carl, grandchildren, Sean, Devin, Julia, Kailie, Keith, Alex, Keiran, Asha and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Leonard and her brother Lyle Johnston.
Phyllis was the first born to parents Nelson and Ethel Johnston on a dairy farm in Chilliwack, BC. She learned how to work hard, think on her feet and ride a horse. She met Leonard at UBC, graduated with a Home Ec. degree and they married in 1951.
Vancouver was home until their retirement when they moved to West Vancouver. Phyllis volunteered with community organizations including the University Women's Club and the Vancouver Children's Hospital. She had a passion for cooking and sewing and a good business sense. She opened a fabric store, taught sewing lessons and wrote sewing books. Her strong interest in nutrition lead to publishing More Please, a recipe book for parents.
Special thanks to the staff at Sidney All Care who gave her compassionate and loving care during her final years.
She was an active member of the United Church of Canada throughout her life. Her Celebration of Life Service will be held at Oak Bay United Church, 1355 Mitchell Street, Victoria, BC, and has been postponed until May 2021. More details will be available in early 2021.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the United Church of Canada or the BC Cancer Society would honour the memory of Phyllis.
