Born in Punjab, India.
Surjit Kaur Nahal (née Bindra) was born on January 23, 1932 to Sardar Karam Singh Bindra and Sardarni Dhant Kaur Bindra in Patiala, Punjab and shortly after moved to Nawa Shamsher Chak 95. which was originally a part of Punjab but is now in Pakistan. She had five sisters and four brothers. She moved back to Punjab, India during the partition in 1947 at the age of 15. When she was 18 years old, she married Didar Singh Nahal. Together they had five children. Didar Singh immigrated to Victoria, BC in October of 1972. Surjit Kaur later immigrated to their new home in Victoria, BC with their children on September 11th, 1975. They created a beautiful life together, working hard over the years in the farming, restaurant, and cleaning industries to provide for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always helping others along the way. In 1993, she retired after working for 18 years, where she then helped care for her grandchildren, travelled, and spent time with loved ones. In 1996, they took their children and grandchildren to India to show them where they came from. She also travelled to Disneyland, California, Hong Kong, Japan, England, all over Canada, and took multiple trips to India over the years.
Her intelligence was beyond measure when it came to keeping her family together and on the right path. Her spiritual nature helped all those around her. Her family was everything to her. Spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was her greatest joy. She had a heart and soul like no other.
She would lead her children in the right direction without them realizing it and as they all grew older they would slowly come to understand the decisions they made were actually from her guidance.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Didar Singh; as well as their children Manjit, Jagpal (Jaswant), Gurmit (Parmjit), Gurminder (Harinder), and Inderjit (Harminder). She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren: Navneet (Navan), Amundeep (Jaspreet), Baldeep (Gurinder), Amardeep (Christina), Bikramjit (Amandeep), Sunny (Simrandeep), Rajinder, Jaskaran (Rabia), Gur-reet (Tanveer), Gaurav (Jaskiran), Rajveer (Harmene), Gurpreet (Ajaybir), and Gagandeep (Harman).
