“Like the sands through the hourglass so are the days of our lives”
One more of Oromocto’s finest has said her final farewell. Valerie Morris had to leave us on July 24th at 6:02 PM.
It was our Deni who drew the long straw so to speak, and held mum’s hand, whispering sweet memories of days gone by, until Valerie‘s last breath.
Val was a devoted daughter, a beloved sister, a crazy, wonderful, dramatic C- Goat of a Mum (Oromocto’s Amateur Acting Troupe).
She and our Dad,Ray loved Mess Dinners, dancing, costume parties camping, beaches and playing cards. Course, Mum the rebel didn’t have a license to drive, but took that stance ‘beg forgiveness’. She crammed many neighbourhood kids into our old relics to go to French Lake, as her skills improved, we’d go to Grand Lake. Tuesday night, was our Buck night, at the Drive-In!
The sweetest side,of Val was like: ‘HI DARL’N to everyone, yet her sharper than a serpent’s tooth, er tongue touted much wit, as well, harsh sting with sarcasm.
Like many soaps, Mom loved her many careers; caring for her ageing folk, raising Cain, oops, raising Kids, working-serving hundreds of officers, at F6 which was more like the sitcom F Troop.
A point of pride was working for Major Romeo Dallaire during his tenure at the Base.
Another such favourite soap opera was slaving away at the Wandlyn Motel’s highfaluting restaurant serving up fine French cuisine where Valerie was waitressing, bartending and sometimes Maître D., mixing, swirling n' twirling Spanish and Irish coffees, and serving up Coquilles St. Jacques, Beef Bourguignon, Chateau Briand. So respected, was Val, that owner, Charles Llewuellen had her head up his private dinner parties at his mansion.
The last 5 years of Val’s 94+ years were spent in true retirement and in high fashion in Brentwood Bay.
Her room was her sanctuary where she read her books, did her crosswords, and watched her YnR, Wheel, Jeopardy and reruns of TCM on her Big Screen.
The Holy nickname bestowed upon Val, Ann, Sandra Le and the Lovely Late Carm Bourque was christened when they identified themselves as ’Sisters’ in Italy 20 years ago, The assumption, made; they were Nuns!
The two youngest Nuns came regular as clockwork.
The yelling, hollering and the laughter when the 3 nuns got together was proof in the pud’n, that Valerie was in a good place!
She enjoyed a steady stream of admirers, as well all our friends, bearing gifts of treats n time, and flowers, and joining in a card game. Her doting grandkids made time for her! One special mention, Brian Ball, the Butler, Chauffeur, Chef, had nothing but praise and wine n song, n music, for his tidiest of roommates!
Our hearts, heaped with grief, but our hearts also soar with the pride of knowing she was loved to the fullest, she was cherished to the ‘Nth’ and she was idolized for being all we needed and then some!
Bye Darlin’ Valerie, for now, you too, have “Gone with the Wind”.
