She had participated in their Monday Singalong the evening before. Vera was born on a winter’s day in Forestdale, BC in 1925. Early years were spent on the farm with her parents, Ivy and Lars Nelson, and two siblings, Ralph and Helen. She came to Victoria in her late teens and made her life here. She was proud to be a telephone operator in the late forties, a role she returned to once her family was grown. She had a gift for languages and a gift for voice recognition-very useful during her twenty years at Victoria General Hospital as a switch board operator. She enjoyed a retirement of travel and gardening with her husband, Gunnar.
Two weeks shy of her 95th birthday she leaves to mourn her son, Larry (wife Vicki) Neilson and her daughter, Deanna Hutchings and four beloved grandchildren: Steve Hutchings, Joanna (Adam) Brousseau, Kevin and Kristopher Neilson and one great granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth.
Predeceased by her husband, Gunnar, in 2002. With heartfelt gratitude to Dr Mike Mawdsley and the staff at Oak Bay Lodge. Donations to the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary in her honour would be welcome, if you wish.
A service is not planned at this time.
