Vicki was born in Vancouver, BC, grew up in Nelson BC, and moved to Victoria with her young family in 1971. Vicki was a well-respected Registered Nurse, primarily at Glendale and the Lodge at Broadmead, who always strove to make end of life comfortable for patients under her care.
Vicki is survived by her husband, Gary Townsend, daughter Joanne Munch, son Dylan Munch (Melanie), nephews Ken Philpot (Vicky) and David Philpot (Darlene), nieces Shannon Breeze and Susan Woods (Dan), and many great nieces and nephews.
People can perceive a weakness in a person dealing with bipolar mental illness without seeing the strength and courage one must have to do things like take a leave to address their mental health, and then to return to work. Importantly, when Vicki was seeking help for herself, other people also seeking help would gravitate to her as they recognized that when talking to Vicki they would receive understanding, caring and support. Vicki often encouraged people to not be afraid to ask for help.
More than one doctor reviewing Vicki’s story commented that they admired her for remaining positive while managing all the physical health challenges she faced, and that the full breadth of her experience was remarkable. Vicki was very grateful for the support of family and friends, and was never remiss in expressing her thanks and love.
We want to thank all the doctors and hospital staff that have helped Vicki throughout the years and in her recent hospital stay. A special thank you to Dr. David Swan who was a tireless advocate for Vicki while serving as both her doctor and her friend for decades.
At Vicki’s request, instead of a service, family will be visiting Vicki’s favorite places of Point-No-Point, Tofino, Nelson and Moyie Lake/Cranbrook to scatter her ashes.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vicki’s name to a charity of your choice that provides support to people or animals.
