My special memories of Wilma (Willie) Cooper with George raising their two wonderful sons.  Wilma will never be forgotten for her love, compassion, generosity, kindness, support, coffee times, sharing times, fellowship and above all her friendship.

It was with sorrow that I learned of Mrs. Cooper's passing, though I am sure in heaven there has been much rejoicing as Mrs. Cooper joins our lord and father, who lights our way.  I will always remember Mrs. Cooper as a very capable and dedicated christian lady, who worked tirelessly to provide community within any church.  At Royal Oak Baptist Church, I knew the kitchen area downstairs as Willie's kitchen because Mrs. Cooper was always there working to put on a luncheon at church functions. I believe the first time I met Mrs. Cooper was when I was a young adult at Royal Oak Baptist.  I had just begun to attend the church and the young adult's group was having a progressive dinner, where we traveled to various residences for different courses of the dinner meal. Those who know me, know that I am not terribly fond of fish, especially salmon. Perhaps this is due to my prairie roots .  However, at the Cooper home, Mrs. Cooper chose to serve salmon.  With some trepidation I tried some of her salmon, and to my great surprise it was fabulous.  To this day, I have only ever truly enjoyed eating salmon made by Willie.  I will miss Willie's sense of humor with the quick witted remarks, and her chuckle.   My condolences to Mr. Cooper (George, as you now prefer me to say), Dale and Michelle, and Wayne and Kathy.   May there be many blessings in your lives for the love and care you have shown.

We met several years back when my sister Ruth and I spent an evening with you and Wilma. We are also the daughters of Clifford W Blackstaffe. We had an interesting evening of sharing memories over dinner at a restaurant on Douglas Street. (Not sure of the name now)

Wilma Cooper was a friend like no other!

When I needed someone to talk to, listen, or share a hug she was  there.  The coffee pot was always on and Wilma's warm and caring heart  made time through her busy day to cheer and chuckle with me.

Willie was a precious friend  and now  gone,  but not forgotten, a voice loved is  still, a place is vacant within my heart which can never be filled.  I will  miss the sunshine of her face, her smiling ways,  her fond and loving care, along with the joy of crafty coffee time.

Wilma’s Life
 
Wilma (Willie) was born in Victoria on August 12, 1937 to Phyllis and Clifford Blackstaffe. She grew up with her sister Barb, and brother Don. During her youth she was raised in Victoria and Lantzville. Wilma graduated from Victoria High School in 1955.

Wilma & George became acquainted when George welcomed Wilma, a CGIT graduate, to Inter Church Youth Groups of Victoria. They were married September 28, 1956 at Douglas Street Baptist Church by Rev. Jim Barton, with a reception that followed in the church hall.

Wilma worked at Loveck’s News, Provincial Treasury, Motor Vehicle Branch until the arrival of their first son, Wayne, in October 1962. Soon another son, Dale, arrived in July 1964.

Wilma’s vocation was Domestic Engineer. She created, with George, a loving home to raise two boys and managed to keep them in line, fed and ready to help on projects and church, through their years of school. When Wayne and Dale married, she extended her love and care to their wives Kathy and Michelle. She adored her four grandchildren Elizabeth and David, Gareth and Kaytlyn.

Wilma continued to show compassion and care to others with her cooking, baking, knitting, crochet and crafts that she happily shared to and with others. Wilma and George enjoyed trailer camping and salmon fishing together, and made many new friends.

Willie and George were actively involved with the churches they attended, Douglas Street Baptist, Royal Oak Baptist and Elk Lake Baptist. They also dedicated many years to Sylvan Acres Baptist Camp.

Wilma received a diagnosis of Alzheimer's two years ago. The things and tasks that she would normally be able to do, slowly became no longer possible for her.

With love and support from George, family, friends, Wilma was able to complete her life with respect and dignity.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff from Home Support, Victoria General Hospital and to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Extended Care Unit.
