Born in Beulah, Manitoba, April 5, 1915, deceased in Victoria June 8, 2016. Died with her usual grace and dignity at Victoria Hospice in her 101st year. Nurse, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Good neighbor to all. Leaves with happy memories her sons, Robert (Sally) of Vancouver and Brian (Carol) of Kamloops. Grandchildren Rob (Andrea), Drew (Cecile) and Mary Ann (Bret). Great grandchildren Emma, Ethan, Matthew, Olivia and Jason. Predeceased by her parents Harry Hemmons and Eva Orr and her only brother Bob in WWII. Dode was a tough prairie gal (heavy on the meat and potatoes-hold the salad and veggies!) who retained her small town values all her life. A caring and supportive friend always - if you needed her, she was there. She possessed a wicked sense of humour and dressed with style and elegance. Everything had to be coordinated. Born in Beulah, moved to Birtle, then Wawanesa. As a young woman she attended Brandon College in the 1930’s, followed by nursing training at Miseracordia Hospital (a profession she was so proud to be a member of) in the early 1940’s. Arriving in Victoria in the late 1950’s with her boys, she was employed at Royal Jubilee Hospital, finishing her career as the head nurse of the Renal Dialysis Unit. As she said at her 100th birthday party, “I had a damn good run!”. Yes, you did. Donations appreciated to either the Victoria Artificial Kidney Fund, Victoria Hospice or Red Cross. Memorial Service at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 1701 Elgin Road, Oak Bay, June 21st, at 2 p.m. Please stay for a reception at the church.
Arrangements under the direction of First Memorial Funeral Services, Victoria, BC.
