Alice Elizabeth Elder Stevenson, 85, of Victoria died Saturday, February 11, 2012, in San Antonio. Betty, as she was known to family and friends, was born January 15, 1927, in Wichita Falls , Texas , to the late Charles Bertram Elder and Loretta Rae Smith Elder. Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Charles B. Elder, Jr. She was a Catholic and an original member of Our Lady of Victory Cathedral.
Betty graduated from Calhoun High School in 1944 and attended Incarnate Word University in San Antonio. She married the love of her life, Rufus Alfred Stevenson, Jr., M.D., in Port Lavaca in 1945. She was a devoted and loving mother and wife. She was active for many years in the Parent-Teacher organizations of Our Lady of Victory School, Nazareth Academy , and St. Joseph High School , Currer Bell Study Club, and in the VicGoLa Medical Auxiliary. She was truly an exceptional Den Mother, using her special talents and creativity to teach and entertain Cub Scouts. In her later years she volunteered with the Crisis Pregnancy Center , researched and compiled her family genealogy, helped with Smith family reunions, and she was a devoted member of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament Associates in Victoria .
Betty dedicated her entire adult life to being the best wife and mother she could possibly be. She is survived by those she lived for, her husband, R. A. “Steve” Stevenson, M. D., and children: Charles (Aideen) Stevenson of Cairns, Queensland, Australia, Robert (Susan) Stevenson, M.D., of Kerrville, Mary (Michael) Gallagher of Atlanta, Ga., Ann Trost of San Antonio, John (Marian) Stevenson of Victoria, Kay (Henry) Herndon of Spicewood, Molly Daniels of San Antonio, and Peter (Sandie) Stevenson of Denver, Co., as well as chosen son, Charlie Van Metre of Houston.
She also is survived by her seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren: Kelly (Kyle) Flessner and children, Avery and Erin, of Lucas; Robb (Courtney) Stevenson of Austin; Kim (Donald) Nodora and children, Angelina and Kai; of Hayward, Ca.; Brian (Jess) Gallagher of Watertown, Ma.; Amy (Craig) Hough and children, Gabriel, Jonah, and Shane, of Bastrop; Stephen Gallagher of Atlanta, Ga.; Jennifer (Trent) Oswalt and children, Taylor, Mackenzie, and Connor, of Universal City; Joel (Melissa) Trost and children, Rylan and Cason, of Seguin; Lauren (Eric) Engebretson and children, Elizabeth and Emma, of Tomball; Chris (Audra) Stevenson and son, Sage, of Houston; Matt (Morningstar) Stevenson and children, Josephine and Elliott, of Ann Arbor, Mi.; Jacob Stevenson of Austin; Henry Herndon IV, of Spicewood; Randy (Jacy) Daniels and daughter, Adalynn, of Denver, Co.; Callie Daniels of San Antonio; Sara Stevenson of Denver, Co.; and Patrick Stevenson of Denver, Co. She is also survived by her two chosen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Kylie (Dylan) Hrncir and children, Pam, Seth, Toby, and Blaise, of Warsaw, Poland; and Amanda (Jacob) Perkins and children, Caleb and Ashlynn, of Houston.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16, at Colonial Funeral Home in Victoria. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 17, with The Most Reverend David E. Fellhauer and Monsignor Michael Harrold officiating. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons: Robb Stevenson, Chris Stevenson, Matt Stevenson, Jacob Stevenson, Joel Trost, Stephen Gallagher, Brian Gallagher, Randy Daniels, Patrick Stevenson, and Henry Clay Herndon IV.
