Dad was born in Mexico City to the late Monroe and Carmen Bornn. At the age of 8, he moved to New York and resided in Brooklyn until he joined the Army Air Corps. His grandchildren loved listening to his stories about baseball during this time and his passion for the New York Yankees. Art spent more than 25 years of his life serving his country. A career military flight engineer, he served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His military career started in 1939 when he joined the Army National Guard, later enlisting in the newly-formed United States Air Force. Art served in many historical endeavors, such as Operation Vittles – the code name for the Berlin airlift. He was a flight engineer on a C-54 troop carrier that flew supplies from Frankfurt to Templehoff in Berlin during Russia’s supply blockade of Berlin. Dad received his pilot’s license at North Beach airport now known as LaGuardia in New York. Art’s love of flying continued through the years after his military career, enjoying afternoon flights out of Victoria Regional Airport with his sons.
