Charlotte (Dworaczyk) Sartor, 85, of Victoria, Texas died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, December 22, 2017. She is survived by her children Greg (Patty), Julie (Charlie), Joan (Matt), John (Deena) and Gigi (Toby). She was known as Lulu to her 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Asa. Surviving siblings are Helen, Veronica, Bernard, Archie, Frank, Marty, and Barbara. Her husband, George Asa, son, George B “Scooter”, sister, Bernadine, brother, James and parents, Ben and Veronica Dworaczyk, preceded her in death.
Charlotte was the 2nd of 10 children, born at home to parents who farmed and ranched. As a child she worked in the fields with her sisters. The family raised their own beef and grew their own vegetables; they were the original organic farm and ranchers. She really did walk over a mile to the bus stop from the farm carrying her shoes so they wouldn’t get dusty.
Charlotte met the love of her life when set up on a blind date while in nursing school in Houston. George tried to impress her with his motorcycle but ended up getting it stuck in the mud.
She was raised with the philosophy from her father that “the world doesn’t owe you a living, the only thing you get is what you earn”. Hard work was the norm. Family was always first. She instilled her commitment to family through her children making sure they knew their siblings were their first and best friends. Regular visits to Grandma and Grandpa’s farm further solidified love of family with 18 aunts & uncles and over 40 first cousins.
While her husband pursued his military career, Charlotte had her own career as a Registered Nurse. She was as much in the Army as George because she followed him around the world with their 6 children and household goods in tow. Her passport picture is a favorite as she is surrounded by 4 children and holding a baby. As parents of 6 children, they were very pragmatic and knew what sacrifices were needed to insure the children received the best education, much of it in Catholic parochial schools.
Charlotte had a strong Roman Catholic faith and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church since 1974. She was a member of the Altar Society and was an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. She was also a Master Gardener and a member of Victoria County Master Gardener Association.
As a R.N., she worked in emergency rooms and hospitals around the U.S and overseas. In Bangkok, Thailand, she worked for the State Department clinic taking care of Americans. In Victoria, she worked in Public Health for over 20 years at the Victoria County Health Department and was the Director of Nursing.
She was a very good cook and was known by her children and their friends for her Lasagna and Greek Spaghetti. She knew how to feed a crowd and all were welcomed. Charlotte loved opera especially if the Three Tenors were singing and was a lifelong Spurs fan. She always said, “They were such good boys”.
Charlotte had very high standards for herself and her children. She had interesting mottos like: “My way or the highway.” “Don’t put it down, put it up.” “Do it right the first time.” And a favorite, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me!” Charlotte lived what she preached. Her philosophy of life will live on in her children and grandchildren. Mom, we love and miss you!
