Dan was born on February 10, 1939, in Ashland, Kentucky, to John Christopher Sweeney and Myrtle Irene (Lester) Sweeney. He grew up in Victoria, Texas, graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in 1957, and later attended Texas A&M University.
On February 14, 1959, Dan married the love of his life, Amelia “Millie” Kleiber. Together they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage until Millie’s passing in 2017. They raised four sons—Christopher, Charles, James, and John—who were the pride of Dan’s life.
Dan enjoyed a long and dedicated career as a Chemical Plant Operator with Union Carbide, where he worked for 43 years. In the early 1980s, he accepted an assignment in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, where he and Millie embraced the opportunity to travel and explore the region’s beautiful mountain ranges. A lifelong baseball fan, Dan, especially loved cheering on the Houston Astros. Some of his happiest moments were spent coaching his sons in the Victoria Little League.
In retirement, Dan and Millie continued to travel, visiting their sons and grandchildren, researching their family's genealogy, and collecting keepsakes along the way. They were longtime members of Grace Presbyterian Church. In his later years, Dan took great pride in caring for his yard and was always attentive to neighbors who might need a helping hand.
Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Amelia “Millie” Sweeney, and his parents, John and Myrtle Sweeney.
