David Lee "Buck" Buchanan, Jr., born August 31, 1938 in Knoxville, TN, was called to his heavenly home August 3, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents, David Lee and Myra Parrish Buchanan and brother, Thomas Milton Buchanan.
A proud graduate of Calhoun High School Class of 1956, Lee went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin in 1961. He spent over 40 years with Union Carbide, where his work and commitment earned him the respect of colleagues and peers alike. He was a long term member of the Instrument Society of America.
Beyond his career, Lee had a deep passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, skeet and trap shooting, pursuits that brought him peace and a sense of connection to nature and his family. As a young man, he earned his Eagle Scout badge in the Boy Scouts of America and went on to serve for many years as a Boy Scout leader, guiding the next generation with patience and wisdom and earning his Wood Badge BSA leader award. He also played an instrumental role in expanding the 4-H shooting sports program in Calhoun County, helping to shape the lives of many young people. Other pursuits that brought him joy included playing duplicate bridge, dominoes, reading and collecting books, collecting vinyl records, winemaking, barbequing, cheering on his favorite UT Longhorn sports teams, and spending time with friends and family. A man who liked to keep busy, he always made time for his daughters and grandchildren.
Lee was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, sharing his passion for nature and the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. Favorite family memories include camping on the beach and in the woods which instilled an appreciation for the outdoors. He greatly enjoyed family fun at Schlitterbahn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ellen Stubbs Buchanan; his daughters, Joan Sassman (husband David) and Ann Carpenter (husband Steve); grandchildren, Dylan Sassman (wife Danielle), Brooke Neskora (husband Ross), and Hannah Carpenter. Lee took great pride in his great-grandchildren, Claire Neskora and Wyatt Sassman, and cherished every moment spent with them. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who were dear to him.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 10-11am at Colonial Funeral Home, with a memorial service to follow at 11am. A private burial will be held at a later date.
His legacy of love, leadership and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
