Born on November 20, 1948, to Martin Lewis Cano and Sophie Ames Cano, Julius lived a life devoted to education, leadership, music, family, and service to his community. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Martin Douglas Cano; and his grandparents, Cecilio Flores and Guadalupe Flores.
Julius graduated from Victoria High School in 1966. He later earned his Doctorate of Education from Nova University on June 22, 1987, a milestone that reflected his lifelong dedication to learning and educational excellence.
Throughout his career, Julius touched countless lives as both an educator and mentor. He began as a teacher and coach for the Bloomington Bobcats, where he inspired students both in the classroom and on the field. In 1987, he became the Executive Director of Region 3 Education Service Center, a role he faithfully served in until his retirement in 2014. His leadership and commitment to education left a lasting impact across the region.
In recognition of his contributions to the community, Julius was honored with the Spirit of Excellence Award by the Greater Victoria Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on March 31, 1998.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Julius was deeply passionate about music. He loved playing guitar and singing, sharing his talent and joy with many through the band “Touch of Gold,” alongside his older brother, nephew, and numerous lifelong friends. Music brought him happiness and created treasured memories for all who knew him.
Julius is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Gloria Trevino Cano; his daughter, Jennifer Cano; his son, Julius D. Cano; his sister, Martha Cano Simpson and husband Jerry Simpson; and his brother, Jeffrey Dale Cano and wife Lisa Cano. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, as well as countless friends, colleagues, former students, and community members who will forever cherish his wisdom, kindness, humor, and unwavering love.
Pallbearers will be Martin Douglas Cano Jr., Michael Cano, Rodney McKinley Franklin Jr., Stephen Rodarte, Robert “Kiko” Trevino, and Mark Holguin.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Philip G. Trevino, Cherokee McGrath, Brandon Smart, Aimee Garcia and Niki Garcia.
Dr. Julius Darrell Cano’s legacy will live on through the many lives he influenced, the music he shared, and the family and community he loved so deeply. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered always.
