Elroy went to school near Kenedy for one year, and then the family moved to the Polk Grove Community where Elroy went to school at Knoche's First Divine Association until he was 13. Upon returning from his enlistment Elroy went back to work for Zaruba Chevrolet until 1957. He then moved to Victoria and was hired by Boles Oldsmobile as a mechanic. After a while he went to work for the Valley Gold milk and Creamery delivering ice cream. He soon met the love of his life, Bessie Palmer. They were married in 1960. Elroy then became a station manager for Rother Exxon and retired in 1993. After a short retirement he went back to work as a shuttle driver for Killebrew for about 10 years until his wife became ill. Elroy was active in TPA, American Legion, VFW and the Independent Cattleman’s Association. He was Past President of TPA and held many offices in the VFW at the district and state levels.

I was a partner at Rosewood Funeral Chapels until I retired in May 2016. I had the pleasure of meeting Elroy some 30 plus years ago at Rother's Exxon. He was always there to help with any matter dealing with my car. I respected Elroy for serving his country during the Korean Conflict and continuing to honor his fellow comrades helping with military honors the Victoria Veterans Council would provide to fallen hero's. He was always a pleasure to talk and work with. He will definitely be missed. May god bring his blessings upon the entire Hackbarth family.

Mae I am so sorry about Elroy's passing . I had been praying for him ever since I heard he was ill. I won't be at the services as I get to emotional and I would embarrass myself because I cry so hard at funerals. I have missed seeing you'll at the VFW. It is getting hard for me to go there. Elroy was about the only one left to help me remember names of the ones already gone. I have the walking cain he gave me and I use it every day. Also I have a little piece he gave me that has Jesus on it if you look at it just right. Hope you are doing okay.
