Gloria had four brothers -- Sammy, Jimmy, Jerry and David.  When my family moved into the house on the other side of the block (our back doors faced each other across a large, empty lot) from the Chamberlains in the early 1950s, David became my first real friend.  As tiny, pre-kindergarten boys, we were constantly in and out of each others' yards and houses, often sleeping over.  I never called Gloria anything but "Sister," as that is what her brothers and parents called her most of the time.  She was a kind girl, and an ideal "big kid."  My fondest memory of her is of the afternoon she read a Scrooge McDuck comic book to David and me, as we huddled next to her on either side of a big bed in the Chamberlains' back bedroom.  She must have been putting us down for a nap.  I am sad to learn that she has taken her leave, but confident she is enjoying her reunion with her parents and brothers.

Susan and Cathy, I am so sorry for our loss. I loved your mother dearly. We shared so many prayers and hopes together. She brought into my life  much joy! I will miss our morning and evening phone calls.

Susan and Cathy,  I was so sorry to hear that Gloria had left us. We had not been close for the past years but I have so many wonderful memories of our friendship years ago. We played lots of golf, cooked and shared meals, and shared sad and happy moments in our lives.  She was really a very wonderul friend, mother, wife, daughter and sister. The world was a better place for her being with us.  My thoughts and prayer are with you both and your families.

Gloria was a sweet, delightful girl and young woman when I knew her back in Refugio so many years ago. She painted a roseate spoonbill as a gift to my parents; and it hung in our living room in Refugio for all the years we had our home there.   She will always remain a lovely memory in my mind..........Dinah Meitzen Mittelstedt.  My condolences to her family.

I still remember the first time I met Gloria at the end of the summer of 1944 when her family returned to Refugio from their summer vacation.  My family had moved there earlier in June.  She was two years ahead of me in school, but we were active in Methodist youth together.  Gloria's mother and Mrs. Meitzen sent me a beautiful bouquet when my first daughter was born.  My husband and I were living in Chicago where he was stationed with the army.MaryA

Cathy and Susan- I know you will miss your Angel Mom, as we all will.  She was a prayer warrior and good friend and Mother.  This town has lost a beloved friend and great infuence for the greater good of Victoria.  I salute you, Gloria -thank you for caring for all of us!

Susan and Cathy, I'm so sorry to read that your beautiful mother has died.  I always loved being with Gloria; she was so lovely in every way.  I feel very lucky to have known her.
