

James Edward Hobbs, 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on July 20, 2010. James, affectionately known by his family and friends as “Jimmy,” fought a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was the youngest of six children born to Hershell Monroe Hobbs and Hannah Westerdahl Hobbs. He was born in Victoria County on November 4, 1923, and grew up in the Lone Tree farming community. Jimmy attended school in Guadalupe, and graduated from Patti Welder High School in 1942. On September 20, 1945, he married the love of his life, Loretta Marie Staff, and their marriage was blessed with seven children.
Jimmy retired from Motor Supply in 1989, after 44 years of service. He was a long-time member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, serving there as an usher and a Eucharistic minister and participating in many of the parish’s activities and fundraisers. He was also an active member of the parish’s Holy Name Society, a faithful volunteer at Victoria Christian Assistance Ministry, and a former member of the Lone Tree Fire Department. His interests included traveling, dancing, playing dominoes, and watching the Houston Astros games.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Jimmy leaves behind the rest of his family to mourn his passing: children, Carolyn Goldman and husband Donald; Joan Moritz and husband Everette; Sandra Harris and husband Peter; Linda Bryant and husband Ronnie; Susan Snow; and Roger Hobbs and wife Linda. Also, grandchildren, Ann Goldman; James “Lyn” Goldman and wife Brooke; Erin Goldman; Brady Moritz; Colin Moritz; Casey Harris; Laci Harris; Lauren Bryant; Scott Snow; Kristen Snow; Joshua Hobbs and wife Cyndal; Sara Hobbs; Jordan Hobbs; and Reid Hobbs; step-grandson, Chris Bryant; great-grandchildren, Zayda Hobbs and Caleb Hobbs; and step great-grandson, Pierce Bryant.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by son, David James Hobbs; son-in-law, Richard Snow; grandchildren, Matthew Snow and Holli Bryant; sisters, Annabelle Bayer; Callie Obenhaus; and Ommie Mizell; and brothers, Monroe Hobbs and Oliver “Earl” Hobbs.
Visitation for Jimmy will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. A rosary/scripture service will follow at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with the Rev. Celestino Say and Deacon Stephen Borowicz officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy’s grandsons. In addition to his granddaughters, honorary pallbearers will include all the Holy Name Society members and his domino-playing buddies.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Texas, the Our Lady of Lourdes sanctuary restoration project, or the charity of your choice.
