Larry Allen McAuley of Victoria, Texas, died peacefully after a brief illness on December 30, 2016, with much of his immediate family at his side. A memorial service honoring Larry will be held at First Presbyterian Church (2408 N. Navarro Street) in Victoria on Saturday, January 7th, at 2:00. Anyone who wishes to join this celebration of Larry’s life is invited to attend.
Larry was born on July 3, 1949, in West Columbia, Texas - the third and last child of his parents Travis and Tammie McAuley. Larry was a multi-sport athlete graduating from West Columbia High School as a member of the class of 1967.
Larry wed his wife and lifelong partner Sharon Lynn Austin of Bay City, Texas, and they had one son, Robert Bryan. Larry found his life’s calling in the oilfields of southeast Texas. He worked for Texaco for many years before completing his BA degree at the University of Houston – Clear Lake and moving into environmental assessment and consultation. After his retirement from Texaco, Larry and Lynn moved to Victoria where he concluded his career managing his own firm – LAM Consulting.
While working in the oilfields, Larry enjoyed fishing along the Texas coast. He impacted the lives of many young men in Angleton – including his son’s – with his dedicated work as a baseball coach for local summer leagues. He was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed attending Houston Astros games – as a high school player he once took an at-bat against eventual Astros Hall-of-Famer Nolan Ryan. A very private man, Larry enjoyed spending time with his immediate family – his wife and his in-laws in Victoria and his son’s family in Fort Bend County. He particularly enjoyed attending the activities of his granddaughters – like marching band performances and awards ceremonies. In his later years, Larry became an avid reader, often churning through more than 100 books in a year. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Victoria. In late October, Larry was proud to attend the groundbreaking event for a Texas Historical Commission museum project that his son is working on in Austin County.
Larry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lynn Austin McAuley of Victoria; his son Bryan McAuley and wife Amanda Rouse McAuley of Rosenberg; granddaughters Zoe Lynn McAuley of Nacogdoches (Stephen F. Austin State University) and Piper Brynn McAuley of Denton (University of North Texas); his sister and her husband, Reva and Frank Harris of West Columbia; his brother and wife, Travis and Marilyn McAuley of Harrogate, Tennessee; his father- and mother-in-law, Jud and Bette Austin of Victoria; his sister-in-law and her husband, Liz and Don Williams of Sugar Land; and many nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by his father Travis Reginald McAuley and his mother Tammie Victoria Cundieff McAuley.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to honor Larry consider making a donation to the capital campaign for the San Felipe de Austin Museum project. Donations can be sent to the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission, PO Box 13497, Austin, Texas 78711. Donations can also be submitted online; go to www.visitsanfelipedeaustin.com and click the red “Donate” button on the right side of the page. The museum is scheduled to open in 2018.
