Larry served in the armed forces from Nov. 1959 to Jan 1962 in the 7th Infantry Division. He came home and married Sandra Kay Hoff in 1962, at St. Luke’s Lutheran church in Schroeder. They were married for 45 years. Following Sandra’s passing, Larry was blessed to share many years with close friend and companion Sandra Hilbrich.
Larry worked for the Victoria Fire Department with 34 years of service and was known for his ability to work rescue needs on the river. He also did roofing as a side business. He was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Victoria, where he enjoyed participating in the Men's Group and helping with the church's barbecues.
He loved spending time with family and friends and lived by a “work hard, play hard” mentality. Known for his gift of conversation, Larry never met a stranger. He could be found tending cattle, gardening, hunting, making wine, sausage, playing dominos or camping. He was always ready to go dancing or set a trout line, in hopes of some catfish for a fish fry. His stories, humor, and personality were always memorable.
Larry is survived by his children, Sonya (& David) Featherston of Austin, TX, Rae Jean (& Lyle) Hoff of Goliad, TX, his grandchildren Heston Hoff, Graham (& Sydney) Featherston, Luke Featherston and may cousins and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sandra Hoff Volkmer, brothers, David, Kenneth and Glenwood Volkmer, and granddaughter: Faith Featherston.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 30th, 2026 at 10:00 AM, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church (4102 N. Ben Jordan, Victoria, TX 77901) with the funeral service to begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at 2:00 PM at St. Luke’s Lutheran cemetery in Schroeder.
Pallbearers will be David Featherston, Lyle Hoff, Heston Hoff, Graham Featherston, Luke Featherston, Terry Volkmer and Larry Vesely.
Honorary pallbearers include Steven Volkmer and John Volkmer.
