Bert was born on June 28, 1914, in Texas City TX to Sam and Lila D. Meeks. Not long after his birth, Bert moved with his family to the Dent family homestead in Hays County near Wimberley TX . During the depression, Bert joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at the Longhorn Caverns project. Then he moved to Bruni TX where he was employed by the Sun Oil Company.
While in Bruni, Bert met his forever love, Iris Everett. They would go on to live in both Freer and Alice TX and then in Lafayette LA. In 1959, the family moved to Victoria TX where Bert was employed by Union Carbide at the Seadrift Plant until his retirement in 1979.
Bert was a faithful member of the Blyth Road Church of Christ where he served as a deacon for many years. He and Iris hosted many domino and 42 parties for their many church friends.
As a youth and young man, Bert loved and played the game of baseball. In Victoria , he discovered the game of golf. He quickly became proficient and passionate about that sport also.
Bert is survived by his wife, Iris E. Meeks; sister, Christine Calhoun; son Lynn Wells Meeks and wife Shiela; daughter Patricia Jane Hahn and husband James; and son Larry Joe Meeks and wife Shirley. Grandchildren: Thomas Andrew Meeks and wife Lusine; William Wood Meeks and wife Kristen; Madelyn Venable and husband George; Anthony Hahn, Thomas Hahn and wife Annie; Raine Meeks-Cash and husband Mark; and Misti Turner and husband James. Great grandchildren: Kayley Hahn, Arin Meeks, Natalie Hahn, London Turner, Alexander Meeks, and Everett Turner.
Visitation will be held 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, April 29, 2011 at Colonial Funeral Home, 1801 E. Red River, Victoria, Texas . Graveside Services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, April 30, 2011at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 8819 US Hwy 87 North, with Mr. Will McDonald officiating.
