
Dan was born on December 2, 1922 in Delhi, Texas to Thad Acy Sherry and Essie McClary Sherry.
Dan had to quit school at 16 to work in the oilfield to help support the family. In a few years, marriage and a daughter followed. After 20 hard years as a derrick-man, his determination for a better life led him to maintain and clean dairy barns to pay his way through college, earning a BS in mathematics from East Texas Baptist College in 1962.
He then began a long and more rewarding career as a high school math teacher starting in Yoakum. After some 15 years of being single, Dan married Jeanne Schillinger in 1972, and moved to Taylor, and taught there more than 25 years before retiring. Thereafter the two taught GED. Dan was an accomplished pilot, card player, canoe-er, camper and longtime RV traveler, each summer after teaching and after retirement he and Jeanne, headed to cooler places in North America, learning history, geography and culture to relate in interesting stories to students and friends. He lived by himself through February of this year, being totally independent.
Starting in college, he became an ardent Bible scholar, seldom missing his daily readings. He was well ready to move on to his true home as the time approached.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dean, Gene, Denver and Vernon and sisters, Helen and Gladys.
Dan is survived by his daughter, Paula Myler; grandchildren, Jay and Laurie, great-grandchildren; Zoe, Alec, Sonny and Aiden and one great-great-grandchild, all of northwest Arkansas.
He is also survived by his nephew, William Whitworth,III, his wife, Dawn; niece, Shirley LeeAnn Whitworth and her daughter, Tiffany; great-great-nephew William Whitworth IV, all of Alsaka; sister-in law, Lorine Sherry and her daughters; nieces, Essie May Baumbach and Donna Maddox. Dan is also survived by his wife's niece, Jeanne Lias and husband, Al; good friends, Dotty Rambo, James Marek and Corky and Don Jones.
Graveside services will be held at Delhi Cemetery, Delhi, Caldwell County, Texas at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Delhi Cemetery, 6150 S.H. 304, Rosanky Texas 78953.
