Louis Alvin Berger, Jr., 85, of Victoria, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Louis was born in Shiner, Texas, on January 12, 1941, to the late Louis and Lillian Foster Berger.
Louis was the fifth of ten children and attended St. Ludmilla’s Academy in Shiner, where he excelled at baseball and graduated in 1961.
In 1963, Louis was drafted into the United States Army. He proudly served two years of active duty followed by four years in the Army Reserves before receiving an honorable discharge in 1969.
Louis began his career as a welder in Houston and later moved to Victoria, where he continued to grow in his profession and became a senior welder. He took great pride in building, fixing, and making things better. That same care and dedication extended to every part of his life.
When he wasn't working, Louis could be found doing something he loved. He spent many hours in his garden, growing tomatoes for salsa and cucumbers for canning pickles. He enjoyed fishing, tinkering in his shop, attending church picnics, and, most of all, spending time with his family. He loved to dance with his wife, Frances, and never missed an opportunity to share a joke or make someone laugh with his quick wit.
Louis shared 60 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Frances Machicek Berger. They were married on April 23, 1966, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hallettsville. Together, they built a life centered on family and faith. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Genevieve Jordan and Barbi Bridges (husband, Claude). He was also a deeply loved “Grandpa” to his grandchildren, Julia Jordan, Abby Bridges, and Matt Bridges. He is survived by his siblings, Daniel “Pete” Berger (wife, Ruth Ann), Elo Berger (wife, Diane), Victor “Vic” Berger (wife, Patty), Dianna Byrd (husband, Rick), and Robert “Bobby” Berger (wife, Nanette “Kolu”). Louis also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Marvin Berger, Georgie Simper, Dorothy Rohan, and Elroy Berger; and his son-in-law, Richard Jordan.
Louis leaves behind a lifetime of love, laughter, and memories that will be treasured by his family and all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his love and the joy he brought to those around him will be cherished always.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 10 am – 11 am, followed by reciting of the Rosary at 11 am and Mass at 11:30 am, all at Holy Family Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church of Shiner or St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Hallettsville.
