Marjorie (Marny) Lee Tighe Powell went to be with her heavenly Father and family August 25, 2012. She will be missed and always remembered by her three children, Janet Stubbs (Dale), David Tighe (Karen), Sandy VanderDrift (Mark), her grandchildren, Wendy Greathouse, Darin Stubbs, Kevin Tighe, Laura VanderDrift and her great grandchildren, Gavin, Gage and Lucy Stubbs.
Marny was born September 29, 1922 in Wadena, Minnesota to Lulu and Theodore Lee. She was raised in Minnesota with two sisters, Fran Gaslin and Dorothy West, who preceded her in death. Marny was valedictorian of her high school class and graduated in 1944 from Carlton College with a liberal arts degree. After marrying her first husband, Tommy Tighe, they moved to Victoria, Texas where they had 3 children between 1949 and 1955. While she was raising her children, she enjoyed membership in her church and many social and civic clubs. She always enjoyed meeting new people and playing bridge or just visiting with her friends. With her children starting lives of their own, Marny went back to work. She retired in 1988 as the administrative assistant to the hospital administrator at South Austin Community Hospital. She met and married Bill Powell during this time in her life. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with grandchildren.
Marny was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2003 which began her decade long fight against this devastating disease. She moved to The Forum in Woodlands, Texas in 2009 where she had the companionship of others stricken by Alzheimer’s. Through it all she remained true to her God and her family. No matter her circumstances she always had a deep seated need to care for others. Her love for life, her feistiness and her quick smile touched many lives. She was often heard reading the saying she had on the wall in her room “We do not remember days. We remember only Moments”.
The family is comforted that Marny’s fight with Alzheimer’s is at an end and she is finally at peace. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send remembrances to the Alzheimer’s Association, Trinity Lutheran Church, or the charity of your choice.
A special thanks to the staff of the Bridge at The Forum in Woodlands, Texas. They made Marny part of their special family and helped her through the last three years of her life with dignity and love. The family wishes to thank Trinity Lutheran Church also for allowing our mother to complete her journey in the midst of a loving church family.
Visitation for family and friends will be at Colonial Funeral Chapel on Thursday,
August 30, 2012 from 5 to 7pm. Funeral services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 2:30pm with burial following at Memory Gardens.
