Mildred Cunningham Jarvis, 85, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, after a short illness. She is survived by her sister Janice Harvey; sons, Robert and Charles, daughter, Robin Mokry; grandchildren, Michelle Morkry Bakewell and Matthew Mokry and great-granddauther, Liesel Mokry.
Mildred grew up in Palacios, where she loved dancing with the soldiers at the USO. She then joined the Corps of Nurses at the end of WWII. While she was working as a registered nurse at a hospital in Wharton she was introduced to William Jarvis, a pastoral student working as a teacher in Kingsville, who was not given to dancing. They soon married and served the Lord together at Presbyterian Pan American School in Kingsville, and several church communities in northeast and south Texas. After pastoring the First Presbyterian Churches in Falfurrias and Premont, for 15 years, her husband retired from the ministry and they moved to Victoria, where Mildred continued to work at Devereux Foundation until her retirement. She was a volunteer at Citizens Hospital in Victoria until she moved to Memphis for a time with her daughter and participated in the marriages of the grandchildren and the birth of her great-granddaughter. Recently she and her son, Charles, moved back to Austin.
Mildred loved her God, family, nursing career and music. She loved working at the church as an officer and with the women of the church and participating in the church voice and bell choirs. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
