Nancy was born July 3, 1951, in Dallas, to the late David Jackson Vest and Sara “Sally” Ellen Grierson Vest.
She grew up in Victoria and graduated from Victoria High School. She went on to attend the University of Houston, where she earned her degree and began a lifelong career in education.
Nancy was a devoted teacher and lifelong learner who shared her knowledge, wit, and love of learning with her students. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was smart and full of personality.
She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and challenging herself with crossword puzzles. She rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy, which perfectly reflected her love of knowledge and a good challenge.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Allison Bryan Burkhart and Sara Elizabeth Burkhart Smejkal (Scott); her sisters, Ann Jackson Vest Rogers and Lesley Ellen “Carol” Vest Sciba; her grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Smejkal, Gretchen Faye Minton (Kaeden), Graydon Durell Smejkal, and Hudson John Smejkal; and her great-granddaughter, Ava Curie.
Nancy will be remembered for the many lives she touched through her family, friendships, and students. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 3002 Miori Ln, Victoria, TX, on Saturday, September 19th, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of South Texas Dornburg Center of Compassion or the St. Francis Episcopal Church.
