

Nelson W. Holz, 84, of Victoria passed from this earth on January 28, 2014. He died with his family by his side of lung failure due to complications of pneumonia at Detar Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Penny Brendle Holz of Victoria, and by his daughter, Renee Mikesky and husband, Shawn, of Schulenburg; sons, Lloyd Holz and wife Patricia of Great Falls, VA, Ronnie Holz of College Station, Kyle Holz and wife, Debi of New Braunfels, Jason Holz and wife, Collin of Coppell, TX, and Russell Barthels and wife, Brandi of Victoria. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Friedrich of Austin, as well as 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Nelson was a mentor and a leader throughout his busy life, a lover of people who was involved in sports, community service, professional service, church activities, and the great outdoors. From his earliest years in the 50’s he was a Victoria Little League coach, founding member of a local Lutheran church, and president of the Houston Square Dance Assoc. His relaxed moments were on the water fishing with his young sons, on the ranch or in his garden.
He was president of the Schulenburg football booster club and the Schulenburg Lion’s Club, member of the local school board, president of the Schulenburg Festival planning committee, multi-restaurant manager, and church and community organizer. Growing up in rural Fayette County, he had a life-long love of cattle ranching, hunting and fishing.
Settling permanently in Victoria in 1975, Nelson found his calling in a wide range of local involvement. He was president of the Victoria High football boosters, and for some 20 years the Vice President of Marketing for Al Hogan Homebuilders where he was twice awarded National Sales and Marketing Man-of-the-Year by the National Homebuilders Assoc. After retiring, he was a business consultant and member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Nelson and Penny, the love of his life, shared a broad spectrum of friends and acquaintances through their career work together.
Nelson’s zest for life, love of family and striving for excellence continue to be examples for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as friends who came to know his trusting and caring disposition.
The family will receive friends and guests on Thursday, January 30 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Rosewood Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, January 31 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church with Rev. John Waak officiating. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 pm at Salem Memorial Cemetery, near Schulenburg.
Pallbearers are Randy Friedrich, Dwayne Friedrich, Nathan Loth, David Friedrich, Andrew Holz, Ryan Holz, Hunter Barthels and Roger Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Larry Riedel and the caregivers of Sodalis in Victoria.
