Petra Leal Duenez

Petra Leal Duenez, 90, of Victoria, formerly of Port Lavaca, entered heaven to rejoice in eternal glory on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. She was born in Olivia, Texas, on September 15, 1933, to the late Santos Leal and Ester Perez Leal. Petra was a dedicated mother to her children (always putting her children first) and a devoted spouse. Selflessly and tirelessly, she dedicated her life to her family and home. Petra was intentional in her spirituality, of strong and devout Catholic faith, and a current member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Victoria. Previously, she was a long-time member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Port Lavaca.

In addition to her parents, Petra is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Doroteo Cavazos Duenez; son, Oscar Duenez; sisters Teresa Mendoza, Concepcion Galindo and Guadalupe Leal; and brothers, Felix Leal, Abran Leal, Pedro Leal, and Santos Leal.

Petra is survived by daughters, Juanita Duenez-Lazo (Arturo), Josie Amejorado (Alfred), Alice Soliz (Abel), Maria “Lupe” Torres (Robert), and Christina Duenez; sons, Doroteo Duenez III (Velma), and Hector Duenez (Irma); grandchildren, Arthur Lazo, Jr., Philip Duenez, Melinda Ramirez, Holly Colindres, Ashley Riemann, Eric Amejorado, Aaron Amejorado, Marisa Orta, Adrianne Gutierrez, Amber Torres, Donald Torres, Jr., Michael Torres, Mara Doemland, Max Doemland, Mia Prevatt, and Ava Prevatt, and 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Tomasa Lara, Librada Ramirez, Esther Gonzales, Estefana Reyna, Mary Jane Leal, and Isabel Ornelas; brothers, Edward Leal and Antonio Leal; as well as numerous extended family, all of whom will cherish her memory and miss her greatly.

Visitation will be on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 8 a.m. followed by a rosary at 8:30 a.m., and Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am, all at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Victoria. Interment will be on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 10:30 am at Port Lavaca Cemetery in Port Lavaca, Texas.

Honoring Petra by serving as pallbearers will be Arthur Lazo, Jr., Aaron Amejorado, Donald Torres, Jr., Michael Torres, Philip Duenez, Philip Duenez, Jr., Christopher Martinez, Paul Orta, Jr., and Michael Gutierrez. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Arturo Lazo, Sr., Alfred Amejorado, Abel Soliz, Eric Amejorado, Kaden Amejorado, Dominic Torres, Matthew Ramirez, Robert Doemland, Gregory Duenez, Jr., and Willie Duenez.

Honoring Petra by serving as members of the Floral Committee are her granddaughters and great-granddaughters, Mia Prevatt, Ava Prevatt, Cameryn Amejorado, Malerie Orta, Olivia Orta, Mykayla Gutierrez, Arabella Torres, Maddie Ramirez, and Amaris Duenez.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.
