Richard Schmidt, 82, of Victoria, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025. Born on November 1, 1942, in Wilmington, Delaware, to Edward W. Schmidt, Sr. and Catherine T. Schmidt, Richard lived a life marked by dedication to his family, career, and passions.
Richard was an incredible husband and father, known for his remarkable ability to fix anything and his unwavering commitment to those he loved. He was married to his beloved wife, Kathleen Cebenka Schmidt, and together they built a life filled with love and cherished memories. Richard is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his son, Richard Schmidt; his daughters, Karen Martin, Sarah Schmidt, and Susan Bryant (George); his granddaughters, Kathryne Dunn (Carl), Chelsea Montgomery (Ryan), Sarah Bryant, and Eleanor Bryant; and five great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert, Ronald, and Gerald, and his sisters, Carol, Marsha, Deborah, and Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward W. Schmidt, Sr. and Catherine T. Schmidt, as well as his brothers, Edward W. Schmidt, Jr., John Schmidt, Thomas Schmidt, and his sister, Barbara Tjaden.
A proud veteran, Richard served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. After his military service, he pursued a distinguished career with Formosa Plastics, beginning when the company acquired the Delaware City Plant. In 1983, Richard relocated to Port Lavaca, Texas, where he was instrumental in the start-up operational activities of the new Point Comfort VCM-PVC plant as Area Manager for the Utility Department. His career progressed through various leadership roles, including Area Manager for the VCM plant and later as manager of the Utilities Department in 1987. In 1993, he took on the role of manager of the Power Department, overseeing steam and electricity production and water purification for the plant's eight-plant expansion. In the mid-1990s, Richard was promoted to Utility Operations Manager, where he managed critical operations, including water treatment and purification, until his retirement.
Richard's zest for life extended to his hobbies, where he found joy as a lifelong avid golfer, an enthusiastic fisherman, and a dedicated member of numerous bowling leagues. His passion for these activities brought him countless friendships and treasured moments.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare team at DeTar Hospital, Hospice of South Texas, and Twin Pines Nursing Facility for the exemplary care provided to Richard during his final days.
Richard's legacy is one of love, service, and skill, leaving an indelible mark on his family, friends, and community.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025 from 10-11am, with memorial services beginning at 11am at Colonial Funeral Home.
