

After attending schools in Beaumont and Odessa, Texas, he served four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Upon completion of his enlistment, he moved to Victoria, where he met his wife of 58 years, Charlyne.
Following graduation from Sam Houston State Teachers College he returned to the oil industry where he worked nationally and internationally. Although he traveled a lot, he always took time to support his children’s interests and activities. He retired from Homco International, Houston, Texas, where he had served as District Manager and later as Sales Manager. He then moved back to Victoria and worked as an oil service consultant.
An avid sports fan, he loved hunting and the outdoors. He was an accomplished golfer and spent many hours golfing with friends and business associates.
He is survived by his wife, Charlyne, son, Russell B. Abshire and wife Kathy, of Houston, Texas. Daughter, Andrea Lynn Rice and husband Steve, of Baytown, Texas. Four grandchildren; Kelly Abshire, Matthew Abshire, Jacob Abshire, of Houston, Texas and Nicholas Rice, of Baytown, Texas. Sister in law, Betty Abshire of Tomball, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Bentley Abshire, mother Ruth Abshire McCright, and brother Jack Marvin Abshire.
Private family graveside services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony by the Victoria Veterans Council.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 11 AM at Rosewood Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Hudson officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are James Steven Andres, Fritz Baumgartner, Howard Bludau, James Dishman, Mickey Kloth, Wilbur Motley, and Monte Salyer.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Baptist Temple Church or charity of choice.
