Our dad, Sam Basil Cattan, "Sammy", was called home August 5, 2012. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 70
years, Nadine Cattan, and four children, son Jim Cattan (Sherry) of Houston, Peggy Rouquette (Jody) of Goliad, Patti Albrecht (Darrell) of Victoria, Becky Pruett (Terrell) of Corpus Christi, grandchildren Cristy Lawrence, Cy Cattan, Toby Rouquette, Mandy Shoemaker, Cody Rouquette, Callie Albrecht, McCager Albrecht, Josh Meadows,
Leslie Meadows, Lance Albrecht, Trent Pruett, and Tyler Pruett and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister, Sarah Hyak (George), sister-in-law Merle Cattan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sammy was born in San Antonio, TX, Dec. 18, 1923 to William Cattan and Maggie Alkek Cattan. When Sammy was ten, the family moved to Victoria where William opened Central Food Mkt. on South Main Street.
Sam attended the old St. Joseph High School and participated in football and basketball. He was named all-state in
basketball and graduated Salutatorian. He would later enjoy participating in the fundraising effort with the building of the presentday St. Joseph High School.
In 1942, Sam met and married the love of his life, Virginia Nadine Chamblee. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding
anniversary on October 10. Sam served in the Army Air Corp during WWII in the 447th Bombardment Group. He flew 35 missions as a radio operator on B17's. Sam was a Tech Sergeant when he left the army.
When Sam's dad passed away suddenly, he took over Central Food Market. He continued to run the business on Main St. until his brother, Billy Cattan, joined him. Together they moved to Navarro St. and changed the name to Cattan's Food Mkt. where they remained until 1992. Sam was an avid fisherman and hunter but was more in his comfort zone when working rather than playing. All those who knew Sammy will attest to his hard-working entrepreneurial spirit. He was a great role model for his children. He taught them by his workethic the value of hard work and perseverance. He was the best example of the American Dream. Through his success, he did what pleased him most - giving to others. He loved the Lord and his
family and will be sorely missed by all he touched.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Billy Cattan and great grandchild, Kate Cattan.
The family will receive friends Thursday, August 9th from 5:30 to 7:30 at Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services are Friday, August 10th, 10:30 am at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Reverend George J. Henninger officiating. Burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Cy Cattan, Toby Rouquette, Cody Rouquette, Josh Meadows, McCager Albrecht and Tyler Pruett.
