A Beautiful Life “I’m going home to Jesus, my life will soon begin Earth’s ties will then be severed as heaven I enter in.” On April 18, 1941 a beautiful baby girl was born to Otis and Theodore Oliver whom they lovingly named Doris Jean. She was the fourth child to be born and the third daughter. Doris grew up in Houston, Texas and attended schools in the Houston Independent School District. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. In her later years, she attended United in Christ Baptist Church of Apple Valley under Pastor Larry McNair. Doris married her childhood sweetheart, Elbert Hines, Sr. in 1956 and over the years three children were born; Martina, Elbert Jr. and Robert. In 1957, she moved to California where she met Jeff Jefferson and from that union, one child was born; Lorenzo. Years later, Doris and Paul Lawrence, Sr. were blessed with two additional children, Pamela and Paul Jr. As years passed, Doris met the love of her life, Freddie Hatton and they married in 1976. Through the passage of time, they adopted three young boys; Reshawn, Jermaine and Ernest. Doris began her working career as a Custodial Technician for Los Angeles School District. She later worked for the County of Los Angeles and after many years of dedicated service, she retired. Later, she and Freddie established their own Cleaning Business. Doris enjoyed life to the fullest and loved being around her family and friends. Her favorite things to do were camping and fishing. In her retirement years she enjoyed having luncheons with her good friends. Doris and Freddie received the prestigious honor on being named the Foster Parents of the Year award in 2004 from the State of California. Doris was called home to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 10, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Theodora Oliver; one brother Otis James and two sisters, Bettie Viola and Joyce Marie. She leaves her legacy to carry on with her daughters Martina Hines of Apple Valley, CA and Pamela Groves (Roosevelt) of Schaumburg, IL; her sons Elbert Hines Jr. of Victorville, CA; Robert Hines of Denver, CO; Lorenzo Jefferson of Juneau, AK; Paul Lawrence Jr. of Apple Valley, CA; Reshawn Hatton of Victorville, CA; Jermaine Hatton of Victorville, CA; and Ernest Hatton of Apple Valley, CA; one brother Bruce Howard (Phyllis) of Harper Woods, MI; a host of grandchildren; great grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many many friends. Today we gather to celebrate her homecoming to Jesus Christ our Lord. Although her presence will be missed, we will cherish and share the fond memories she has left behind. “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.”
