

James Joseph Friedhof, MSGT Sept 8, 1942 – March 16, 2016 James “Jim” Friedhof was loved and respected and will be greatly missed. He lost his battle with cancer on March 16, 2016 at the three o’clock hour. Jim was born September 8, 1942 at Elma, IA, the son of James L. and Anicetus (Ferrie) Friedhof. He was a 1960 graduate of Elma High School, enlisted in the US Air Force (USAF), and served overseas in Thailand, England, and Germany. In 1971 he was united in marriage to Nena (Apaga) at Upper Hayford Chapel, Oxfordshire, England. He served the USAF for over 26 years with special training in Weapons Control Systems, Defensive Control Systems, Integrated Avionic Attack Control Systems, and Fire Control Systems. Decorations and medals include USAF Good Conduct Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship, USAF Longevity Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, USAF Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Upon retirement he became an active member of the Our Lady of the Desert Church, Eucharistic Ministry to the Sick, the Knights of Columbus, and Legions of Mary in Apple Valley, CA. Jim is survived by his wife, Nena; 2 daughters: Anna (Trevor) Rodrigues, Angelina (Frank) Newton; 4 sons: James P. (Irene), Peter, David (Jolene), Tom (Melissa); 8 grandchildren: Darius, Carter, Ryen, Sawyer, Hunter, Bauer, Genavieve, Lucia; 4 sisters: Sister Margaret Friedhoff, RSM of Milwaukee, WI, Sharon of Tucson, AZ, Mary (Danny) Johnson of Tucson, AZ, Connie of Mosinee, WI; 6 brothers: Francis (Audrey) of Charles City, IA, Irven of Elma, IA, Donald (Donna) of Elma, IA, Gerard of Elma, IA, Paul (Laurie) of Urbandale, IA, Larry (Sally) of Cedar Rapids, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents: James L. (2003) and Anicetus (1981); his in-laws Pedro (1982) and Maria (2012) Apaga; brother Pfc. Dennis Friedhoff (1968, on patrol in Vietnam); daughter Veronica (1980); granddaughter Jayla (2011).
