Robert Lee Risken, of Oro Grande, California, passed away peacefully on July 6th, 2024 at the age of 82 years old. Born on February 15th, 1942, in Oro Grande, California, he was a life-long naive to the land that he loved. As a child he roamed the deserts, and even owned his own rifle and pet monkey at a young age. One of his favorite pastimes was telling stories of his desert adventures to his children and grandchildren. His children, some of his grandchildren, and even some people around the neighborhood, were lucky enough to experience adventures in the desert with him at times. His house resembled a museum as he picked up antiques along the way, and knew the story behind every piece of history he owned. A deep connection with the Native American culture would lead him to an abundant amount of knowledge that he loved to share with all who were interested.
He is survived by his life partner of over 40 years, Martha Hayes, provided unwavering support and ensured the strength of family connections. His three daughters, Ruby Alvarado, Becky Ontiveros (Tommy), Andrea Perez (Peter) and their mother, his previous wife of 18 yrs, Betty Griego Risken, also his son of a previous relationship, Francisco Risken.Robert's legacy also lives on through his eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Manuel Padilla, whom Robert considered like an adoptive son, was also an integral part of his life.
Anyone who knew Robert personally, knew that he had a knack for adventure, no matter the danger involved, and this guaranteed that anytime you had a visit with him, the conversation would be fun. He had nicknames for everyone, a unique sense of humor, and was beautifully witted with words in poetry, that unfortunately, he didn’t share with everybody. Those who had a chance to hear him recite one of his poems in person are truly blessed with that memory.
All are welcome to join the family and share their memories at Avalon Park, located at 16338 Avalon Avenue, Victorville, California, for the celebration of the life of Robert Lee Risken on August 24th, 2024 at 2pm.
The Risken family would like to extend gratitude to all who have sent their condolences at this time.
