
Sylvia I. (Jones) Tharp, 90, formerly of Monroe City, passed away Friday morning May 20, 2011 at Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper. She was born January 8, 1921 in Martin County to the late John W. and Anna Noreen (Edwards) Jones and had lived in the Monroe City area for most of her life. Sylvia was a homemaker. She married Fred Tharp in 1939 and he preceeded her in death December 26, 1988. She was also preceeded in death by her daughter, Marvelene Marvel in 1992, a grandson, Kent Tharp in 1988 as well as 4 brothers, Orville, Walter, Edward and Alvin Jones. She was a long time member of the Monroe City Church of Christ.
Sylvia is survived by her son, Kenneth (Carolyn) Tharp of Loogootee, a grandson, Doug (Barbara) Marvel of Wheatland, 2 granddaughters, Staretta (Jeff) Vories of Monroe City and Eva Tharp of Vincennes. Also surviving are 4 great grandchildren, Jason Vories, Jared Vories, Haley Marvel and Tory Marvell and 2 great-great grandchildren, Colin Vories and Spencer Hageman.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gardner-Brockman Funeral Home 505 Main Street. Following the service, she will be laid to rest next to her husband and family in TruLove Cemetery south of Loogootee. Friends are invited to visit and share memories of Sylvia with the family on Monday from Noon until the service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Association for the Blind with envelopes available at the funeral home.
