

She was born September 2, 1917, to Dallas Joseph Moreau, Sr., and Mary Lavonia Hampton Moreau and reared in Vinton. She was an alumna of the Southwest Louisiana Institute which is now named University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she was an active member of Delta Zeta sorority. She taught school at the original LaGrange School on Ryan and School streets in Lake Charles and in DeQuincy until she married her high school sweetheart, Bernie Joseph Richard, on November 20, 1941, which was also her parentʼs wedding anniversary.
She was crowned the first Queen of the Calcasieu-Cameron Fair and was a lifetime member of Welsh Memorial United Methodist Church where she was active with the Minnie Kaufman Circle. She held various leadership offices in the United Methodist Women and the Vinton Literary Club throughout her life and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Bernie, and daughter Mary Dee Richard Nicks, and brother, Dallas Joseph Moreau, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Anne Richard of Saint Simonʼs Island, Georgia; son, Don Reese Richard and wife, Frances Beglis Richard, of Vinton; grandchildren, Reneeʼ Richard and Susan Nicks, of Mobile, Alabama, Reed Richard and wife, Debbie, of Nederland, Texas, and Barry Nicks, Jr., and wife Tiffany, of Longboat Key, Florida, son-in-law, Barry Nicks, Sr., of Bradenton, Florida, great-grandchildren, Hanna Rhae Richard, Daniel Trey Duvall, Blake William Donnelly, Hampton Reese Donally, Charles Barry ”Chase” Nicks, III, and Amanda Millar “Millie” Nicks. Pallbearers will be Reed Richard, Barry Nicks, Jr., David Moreau, Chuck Moreau, Luke Moreau, and Dallas Moreau, III, and honorary pallbearers, Scott Lockhart and Barry Nicks, Sr.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, November 21, in Welsh Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton. The Rev. Kathy Fitzhugh will officiate. Burial will be in Big Woods Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Vinton. Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until the time of service Monday, all in the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in the name of Jenel Moreau Richard to Welsh Memorial United Methodist Church, 1100 Horridge Street, Vinton, LA 70668.
